At Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines, we believe that a well-trained service dog partner offers new opportunities for greater independence, enhanced mobility, and social interaction.
Who can sign up to get a service dog?
Veteran must be honorably discharged with a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Military Sexual Trauma and/or a mobility limiting disability.
PTSD must be diagnosed military service-connected, and the applicant must be in on-going treatment by a mental health professional.
Ability to independently complete Team Training, a hands-on training course and reside in our campus dorms in Sylmar, CA for 10 days.

Be prepared to share detailed information that pertains to eligibility including personal history, medical and mental healthcare history, references, and support contacts.
Desire to utilize a service dog for public access and interaction.
Ability to provide a safe, loving, healthy and stable home for a service dog.
Ability to provide for the dog’s physical, psychological and financial needs.
How much does it cost for the vet to get a dog?
Free.
What kind of service dogs are offered?
Service dogs for Veterans, children with Autism as well as Facility Dogs.
Our service dogs for veterans help their partners gain greater independence and reintegration into society. They are task trained to respond to PTSD-related triggers, and can also carry or retrieve objects, provide balance assistance for veterans with mobility limitations, and can remind their partners to take their medications.
How long does it take to get the new service dog?
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The demand for a service dog far outweighs our available service dogs in training and we do not guarantee that every applicant will receive a dog. We screen and interview applicants whose needs match the strengths and skills of our dogs.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the volume of submissions, it may take up to two weeks to receive a response regarding pre-qualification. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Where does the organization get the animals to train?
Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines maintains a large breeding colony to ensure optimum health as well as desirable traits and temperament for successful guide and service dogs. We also network with partnering guide or service dog schools, approved breeders, and co-op breeder programs.
