What makes the organization unique?

The Association of Amputee Surfers (DBA AmpSurf® and the Para Surf League™) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2003 by Dana Cummings, a Marine veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, in Pismo Beach, California. AmpSurf's mission is to Promote, Inspire, Educate, and Rehabilitate (PIER) all people with disabilities and their families through Adaptive Surf Therapy — helping veterans, first responders, disabled adults, and children focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities.
Since 2003, AmpSurf has served thousands of disabled veterans, first responders, disabled adults, and children through its Learn to Surf Therapy Clinics across four U.S. chapters in California, New England, New York, and the Pacific Northwest. In addition to clinics, AmpSurf hosts a twice-monthly VetSurf / Surf on Saturdays program at Pismo Beach, open to veterans, first responders, and people with disabilities — surfers and non-surfers alike. AmpSurf is also an LA 2028 Program Partner and co-creator of the only Adaptive Surfing Instructor certification in the world, developed with the International Surfing Association.
At each clinic, AmpSurf provides all equipment including surfboard, wetsuit, rash guard, snacks, coffee, and a beach wheelchair if needed.

Participants (Athletes) are encouraged to contact AmpSurf in advance to make sure all efforts can be made to accommodate your disability. Please email surf@ampsurf.org

What to expect at each clinic:
AmpSurf will provide snacks, coffee, water, a surfboard, wetsuit, and rash-guard for each participant to use. A beach wheelchair is available if needed. All attendees are highly encouraged to bring their own Sunscreen, Water, Snacks and anything else they think they will need for the days adventure. Volunteers working in the water should have their own wetsuit.

Who can sign up to participate:

Disabled Veterans, First Responders, disabled adults and children. Whether an amputee, visually impaired, suffering from PTS, quadriplegia, autism, or any other physical, mental, or intellectual disability. Open to anyone living with a disability — from veterans of Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan to children with special needs.

How Much Does It Cost?:

Free — All clinics are free to participants.
