What makes the organization unique?

23rd Veteran is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing happier, healthier lives for veterans living with trauma. Their signature program — 23V Recon — is a structured, science-backed 14-week trauma recovery program that combines outdoor adventure, physical fitness, and behavioral health practices to reduce the lasting effects of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

The program begins with a 6+ day wilderness expedition (backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, or kayaking) in partnership with Outward Bound or a top experiential education organization. Participants then attend CrossFit sessions three days a week and five Saturday community experiences before graduating. The program is measured using validated clinical tools including the WHO Quality of Life Scale and the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5.

Who can sign up to participate:

Veterans and first responders who have experienced military-related trauma, including deployment to hostile areas, training accidents, loss of a comrade (including suicide), sexual trauma, drone pilot service, or other military-related trauma. Must be physically and mentally able to complete a 6-day outdoor wellness course (screened by Outward Bound). Families welcome at Saturday events.
