SERVICE DOGS Service Dogs are trained to perform a specific task to mitigate a disability. The disability can be mental and/or physical. The tasks to be performed vary according to the disabilities. Tasks include, but are not limited to, retrieval of medications, water bottles or supplies; operation of light switches, opening/closing doors, mobility tasks, seizure and/or medical alerts, PTSD/nightmare interruption. Service Dogs provide dedicated support, on a 24/7 basis, to a disabled veteran in accordance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA)*. Training for a service dog starts at 8 weeks of age and continues until the dog is placed into service at 18 months to 2 years of age. FACILITY/THERAPY DOGS Facility/Therapy Dogs work alongside healthcare providers offering comfort, affection and support to veterans engaged in rehabilitation or other medical treatment. They comfort the veteran and lower the stress level during procedures, where allowed. The emotional support they provide to veterans during therapy sessions allows the veteran to relax and to support better communication between the veteran and healthcare provider. Facility Dogs visit the sick and their distressed family members, giving comfort during stressful times. Facility/Therapy Dogs work in settings such as schools, VA Hospitals, outpatient clinics, mental health facilities and nursing homes. Facility dog training can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOGS Emotional Support Dogs help relieve symptoms of emotional distress by providing comfort, support, and companionship. While Emotional Support Dogs are well trained animals, they are not trained like Service Dogs that perform a task to mitigate a specific disability. Therefore, Emotional Support Dogs are not allowed the same privileges that the ADA* defines for a Service Dog. Emotional Support Dogs still have an important job however, as they help their veteran through everyday emotions while navigating the personal encounters of everyday life. Training time for Emotional Support dogs can vary depending on age and circumstances. Many of these dogs are rescues or personal dogs. COMPANION DOGS Companion Dogs are personal family pets, whether the dog is one you rescued or the puppy you purchased. These dogs provide comfort to veterans in their own homes as they interact with family, friends, and the general public. VMF will be offering basic obedience training programs to support building a strong relationship with your pet. Training classes will run 6-8 weeks. How long does it take to get the new service dog? The process of reviewing and screening applicants can take up to 6 months. Once on the list, the wait time varies greatly between categories and based on each individual’s needs. Typically, service dog candidates have the longest wait, as dogs with very specific temperaments are needed for these placements. Where does the organization get the aminals to train? With the increase in military veterans returning with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. Tasks may be performed for anxiety, hypervigilance and generalized fear. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives. While veterans interested in a service dog for physical or auditory disability are offered at all six Canine Companions training centers, currently the PTSD program is offered in our Northwest, Northeast and South Central Regions. Service Dog for PTSD- A service dog for post traumatic stress disorder is trained to help mitigate the symptoms of PTSD by providing the emotional and physical support a veteran may need. A service dog for PTSD can be trained to interrupt a night terror, retrieve an item, get help and much more. Facility Dog- These specially trained dogs, spend time working with wounded veterans recovering at military hospitals and veterans medical centers. Dogs work with physical and occupational therapists as they treat soldiers and become an essential part of the healing process. Seizure Response Dog- Seizure response dogs are trained to perform special tasks following a seizure to assist its handler. These tasks may include getting help, operating a call button or k9 phone, or retrieving medication. Military facility Dog- America's VetDogs has trained and placed Military Facility Dogs to provide animal assisted therapy intervention to wounded soldiers and active duty personnel during their journey to recovery at military installations, military and VA medical centers, and VA nursing homes. Unfortunately, there are many families of veterans who feel their loved one should receive the highest honors possible at the time of interment. They perform this mission with disabled veterans from all branches of service who want another mission to be back in service dress uniform to render final honors and pay it forward. They provide service dogs and training at no cost for our disabled veterans who cope with anxiety or depression that could lead to veteran suicide. It is our goal to match the right dog with the specific needs of each recipient. For that reason, our Training Team reviews each recipient application, and your wait time will depend on us having a dog that can best suit your specific needs.
